How to Choose LED Recessed Lights: Lumens, CCT, CRI and Glare

Moderne offene Küche in Deutschland mit Hooled Calla LED-Einbaustrahlern über Arbeitsplatte, Spüle und Vorbereitungsbereich

Understand lumens, wattage, colour temperature, CRI, UGR and beam angle before choosing LED recessed lights for your living room, kitchen or hallway.

With traditional incandescent lamps, wattage was often used as a shortcut for brightness. LED efficiency varies, so two fixtures with the same wattage may produce different amounts of light.

When comparing LED recessed lights, look at lumens first. Wattage mainly describes energy consumption, while lumens indicate visible light output.

More lumens do not automatically create a better lighting result. Fixture quantity, spacing, ceiling height, surface reflectance and beam angle all affect the perceived brightness of a room.

Calla 10W provides 1360 lumens, while Calla 15W provides 1850 lumens. Instead of selecting a fixed number of fixtures per square metre, identify the areas that need ambient lighting and the areas that need stronger task or accent lighting.

Colour temperature does not describe brightness. It describes whether the light appears warmer or cooler.

Around 3000K is commonly used for living rooms, bedrooms and evening dining because it creates a softer atmosphere. Around 4000K produces a clearer appearance and can suit kitchens, work areas or spaces that need a more neutral visual character. Where one room supports several activities, tunable white lighting can offer greater flexibility.

The Calla 10W Smart version supports adjustment from 2700K to 6500K.

The Colour Rendering Index, or CRI, describes how naturally colours appear under a light source. With lower colour rendering, wood, food, skin tones and textiles may appear dull or inaccurate.

Higher colour rendering is particularly valuable in kitchens, dining areas, dressing spaces and interiors where material texture matters. The Calla series has a CRI of 90 or above.

Beam angle determines whether light is concentrated or widely distributed. Narrow beams are useful for accents, while wider beams can support more even ambient lighting.

The Calla 10W has a 50° beam angle and the 15W version has a 55° beam angle. Both use a deeply recessed optical structure, with a stated UGR below 13, helping keep the bright source away from direct view.

Glare control also depends on placement. A fixture positioned directly above a sofa, bed or frequent viewing direction may still feel uncomfortable even when the fixture itself is well shielded.

Plan recessed lighting for living rooms, kitchens and hallways

When choosing LED recessed lights, read the specifications in this order:

Start with lumens, then consider colour temperature and CRI. After that, check beam angle, glare control, cutout dimensions and control compatibility. A fixture performs well only when these factors work together in the actual room.
